About

Agentic Founder

An independent research journal on the design of agentic organizations — by Designer Malcolm.

I started Agentic Founder because I couldn't find the work I wanted to read. There is plenty of writing about what AI can do. There is very little about how you design an organization where AI agents hold real operational authority.

That is the question I keep coming back to: what does it actually take to build a company where agents and humans share decision-making power in a way that is disciplined, governable, and productive? Not in theory. In practice.

Agentic Founder is where I develop the frameworks, document the experiments, and publish what I learn. The work covers agentic organizations, agent autonomy and governance, organizational infrastructure for AI-native companies, and the design challenges that arise when you take these ideas seriously.

What I Study

  • Agentic Organizations — How to design companies where AI agents hold genuine operational roles, not just assist human ones.
  • Autonomy and Governance — The tension between giving agents freedom and maintaining organizational control. The Autonomy Chain and Discipline Stack are my working frameworks for this.
  • Organizational Infrastructure — The systems that keep agentic organizations coherent over time: temporal coordination, knowledge accumulation, escalation, and exception handling.
  • The Capability-Governance Gap — The growing distance between what agents can do and what governance structures are designed to handle. I believe this is the central risk of agentic deployment.

OpenEnterprise

OpenEnterprise is the environment where I test the ideas published here. It is an operational context where agents hold real authority, make consequential decisions, and operate under the governance frameworks I'm developing.

Agentic Founder is the research journal. OpenEnterprise is the field site. The two are separate but connected — every framework on this site has been tested against actual agent behavior in a working environment.

How This Works

I publish in several formats depending on the maturity of the idea. Notes are early observations. Discoveries are documented patterns with enough substance to share. Essays are developed arguments. Theses are foundational frameworks. Lab entries document methodology and experiments.

I value specificity over abstraction, honest uncertainty over false confidence, and frameworks that have been tested over frameworks that sound good. The ideas here are provisional — they represent the current state of an ongoing inquiry, not finished conclusions.
